thesubstream is a collection of passionate movie lovers, folks who adore both the glittery end-product fantasy as well as the gritty, greasy behind-the-scenes reality of hard-work filmmaking. It's also a website.

We're dedicated to spreading the (meagre, but proud) wealth of knowledge that we've accumulated over too many years of film school and too many 20 hour days on sets in Toronto and elsewhere, and so we produce daily original content in the Film Lab dedicated to improving the filmmaking techniques of lo/no-budget auteurs as well as e-reams of film reviews, festival coverage and whatever bits of film-industry and fan-community news we happen to find interesting.

We don't, however, enjoy standing on a digital soapbox and shouting into the aether. We'd rather converse, and so we urge you to let us know what you think, what you want to do in the world of film or otherwise, what we got wrong or why you really like the Chipmunks film franchise. We may call you names, but we'll listen, first.
