Ghostbusters 3 to be Murray-less UPDATE

As you know, a third Ghostbusters film has been in 'development' for like, forever (I first heard about it way back in 1998) and the wrench in the gears has always been the reluctance of Bill Murray to return to the franchise. Murray has been very picky-choosy about his film roles for the last decade or so and has often turned down mainstream Hollywood films for smaller, independent fare - his memorable cameo in Zombieland notwithstanding:

Anyhow, god bless Ghostbusters writer and co-star Dan Aykroyd... He doesn't seem to be giving up on bringing Ghostbusters to the screen for a third time, even if it means losing Mr. Murray. In an interview with Empire, Aykroyd hinted that if Murray keeps his stance about not returning to the franchise, his Peter Venkman character might end up being recast (Aykroyd also denies a rumour that Murray shredded the latest draft of the script).

What say you, Ghostbusters fans? Any interest in a third Ghostbusters film, or are they pretty much beating a dead horse? And what about re-casting Peter Venkman... Good idea? Bad idea? Personally, I don’t really see anybody convincing filling in that role and I think it might be time for Aykroyd to put the Ghostbusters series to rest.

Update 2/29/12: In a recent interview Dan Aykroyd has conceded defeat on the Bill Murray situation and said the film is in "suspended animation" until they figure out what to do. Yay!
