Ridley's Going Back to Neo L.A.

Just when you think you've cooked up an absolutely air-tight maxim, a short-hand bit of wisdom that you can absolutely with 100% certainty use to whip yourself up into movie-fan fury such as "sequels suck and are indicative of the Sickness and paucity of imagination that beplagues Hollywood", just when you're gettin' real cranky and worked up and proud of yourself for inventing the word "beplagues", a dude like Ridley Scott comes along with a needle for your balloon.

While we're stuck in another remake/sequel/prequel filled summer movie season and depression's starting to sink in, deadline.com has brought us some really, really cool news: the aforementioned Mr. Scott will apparently follow up next year's Prometheus (prequel (??) to his 1979 classic Alien) with either a prequel or sequel to the film that's arguably his masterpiece, 1982's Blade Runner.

Scott's future-war take on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep didn't blow things up at the b.o. back when it was released, but to say that it's reputation has grown in the intervening years would be a pretty massive understatement. It's a genius piece of work, and that it was thematically dense and narratively complex in a kid's genre polarized its critics at the time. Throw in the fact that it's been shown since in at least seven different versions (including the domestic cut, an international cut, a test cut that was incorrectly labelled a Director's cut, a "more official" Director's cut and 2007's "Final Cut"), and its easy enough to see how the film's legacy has been burnished by time.

So, yes, it's another sequel, or another prequel (all that's known is that it won't be a remake). Just when I thought I had something to get upset about, the world has to go and make me happy again. The hell.
