Star Trek Writers Haven’t Dropped the Ball, Says Star Trek Writer

Okay, call off the mass panic, everybody. The script for the Star Trek sequel isn’t a mess, after all. So, let’s all breathe a huge collective sigh of relief and get back to speculating about British villains and other mysterious castings.

As it turns out, when Zachary Quinto (reprising the role of Spock in the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot) made some casual comments in an interview last week about the script undergoing changes during filming, he was exaggerating a bit, or so co-writer and producer Roberto Orci (Cowboys & Aliens, Eagle Eye) would have us believe.

Responding to concerned fans on TrekMovie.com, Orci insisted that the changes were hardly anything more than “polishes” and assured everyone that the “movie is by no means written by committee. It has been written by ONE team. Me, Alex [Kurtzman], and Damon [Lindelof]. Thanks to the protective umbrella of the success of our first movie and JJ Abrams, we get less studio interference than almost any other production around.” (Interesting that they're protected from studio intervention but not the screaming meanies at trekmovie.com - Ed.)

“The changes I suspect Quinto is referring to are the character interactions as we fine tune the level of their various friendships,” he wrote.

Orci continued with details on the timing of the script’s completion and the passage of time between the first movie and the upcoming sequel, saying, “the time past [sic] in real life is different than the amount of time passed in the movie world.”

Whether or not you’re reassured by these clarifications, no one should be complaining about getting a few more details on the highly anticipated sequel, which is set for release on May 17, 2013. Of course, if you weren't at all troubled in the first place, know that some people were, and they panicked a little bit, and they have now been reassured.
