DVD/Blu Ray Shed: April 6, 2010

This week's new releases can be found out back in the DVD/Blu Ray Shed, and Mike has picked his favourites and least favourites. Come join him on the adventure of a lifetime as he tells you what they are.

THE PICKS OF THE WEEK FOR THE WEEK THAT HAS APRIL 6th IN IT:

#1. The Collector (dir. Marcus Dunstan)
A razor-gloved burn victim who inhabits a shadowy dream-world and kills teens in their sleep? OK, sure. A hockey-mask-wearing goliath with a penchant for machetery? No problem. So why is it so hard to accept a serial killer that fills a family's home with ultra-violent booby traps including covering the floor of a bedroom in acid and putting a spike in a phone receiver, then puts the family in the basement where he tortures and disembowels them, leaving one alive inside a red box that he will cart around and use to scare the next family he will mess up? Because it's really stupid, for one, and it's very clearly a case of filmmakers trying to inject as much gore into their film as possible, in the guise of character stuff. It's terrible and this torture-porn genre needs desperately to be put out of its misery.

#2. Art & Copy (dir. Doug Pray)
A weirdly, hyperactively positive love letter to an industry that deserves no paean: advertising. Well made but incredibly, off-puttingly uncritical.

#3. Bitch Slap (dir. Rick Jacobson)
Three sweaty big-boobed bad girls duke it out desert-wise with snarling bad dudes in a desert hideaway in this homage to the sexploitation flicks of days gone by that is also completely terrible. It's not that the boobs, guns, heaving and poor acting are a bad idea, it's just that it's all executed really really poorly. Which is... depressing.

#4. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (dir. Werner Herzog)
Herzog returns to fiction with a hilariously weird, sweat-soaked delusion of a cop story. Nicolas Cage gives one of the best performances of last year, and maybe kind-of indicates that he actually might know what he's doing with his whole scenery-chewing thing. Very, very good.
