The DVD/Blu Ray Shed: August NINE!

Because rainy summer days are 'TEH WORST' amiright?

HERE ARE SOME HOME VIDEOS FOR TODAY THIS WEEK:

Paul
(dir. Greg Mottola)

The MAMO boys loved it, I thought it was pretty good. It certainly doesn’t represent writers Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at their most inventive - for a film not made in the late 90s, it’s about aliens and Area 51 and is full of gay jokes and anal probe references. That said, it is entertaining, and this is about as good as Seth Rogan (voice of Paul) gets. I would gladly hang out with Paul over E.T. any day of the week (because E.T. is creepy and kind of disgusting).

Your Highness (dir. David Gordon Green)

Despite being so obviously formulaic (they’ve infused an otherwise straight-up fantasy film with the F-word and a billion dick jokes), it’s not that bad (my WTI here). The film’s funniest jokes are pretty damn funny, and overall the thing’s worth watching just for Justin Theroux alone - how is he not a bigger star? I don’t think I’d ever buy this for my mom as a Christmas present, but if it was on at a friends house while I was over getting high I’d probably say, ‘dude, let’s watch this!’ Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Super (dir. James Gunn)

We saw this at last year’s Midnight Madness and while I found it to be entertaining enough to sit through (thanks to a mind-blowingly incredible performance by Ellen Page), I found myself rolling my eyes a few too many times. The film often gets stuck in the ‘sketch comedy’ nature of its premise. Rainn Wilson plays an unhinged wrench-carrying DIY superhero whose catch-phrase is ‘Shut up, crime!’ That's about as deep as this character gets, which for a 90 minute film doesn't hold up. Still, Ellen page...

Mars Needs Moms (dir. Simon Wells)

I feel really bad for producer Robert Zemeckis... everybody’s dumping on him for abandoning traditional filmmaking for this sort of motion-capture crap, and it probably hurts his feelings. So I gotta say, if you’ve got kids and you want to rent something for them to watch on some rainy summer afternoon, you really could do worse than to support this film.
