DVD/Blu Ray Shed: May 11, 2010

This week's new releases can be found out back in the DVD/Blu Ray Shed, and Mike has picked his favourites and least favourites. Come join him on the adventure of a lifetime as he tells you what they are.

THE PICKS OF THE WEEK FOR THE WEEK THAT HAS MAY 11th IN IT:

#1. Daybreakers (dirs. the Spierig Bros.)
One of our favourites from last year's Midnight Madness at TIFF, Daybreakers is an entertaining take on the future of the Vampire that's half sci-fi tech and half old-fashioned gothic spookiness. Vampires have taken over the world, and blood's become a resource worth waging wars over: vamp scientists drive blacked-out sedans through the daylight but can't be seen in mirrors. It's entertaining from start to finish but lacks a little polish, a problem the Spierigs will correct in their upcoming Dark Crystal sequel.

#2. Prom Night in Mississippi (dir. Paul Saltzman)
"Here's to the land that you tore out the heart of: Mississippi find another country to be part of." Phil Och's sarcastic salute to the state still applies for a lot of folk who feel that Mississippi might still not have really grokked this whole "civil rights" thing. Director Paul Saltzman's doc about actor Morgan Freeman's offer to sponsor Charleston, MS's first racially integrated prom. In 2008. After they had turned him down in 1997. It's a surprisingly charming/predictably disturbing look at just how incredibly resilient racism can be.

#3. Legion (dir. Scott Stewart)
Hilariously bad, even as angels-attacking-a-gas-station-defended-by-another-angel-with-a-machine-gun films go. Some angels are mad at a baby (??) and decide to kill it. In response, some characters hole themselves up in a desert shack and talk, a lot, and shoot at cars, a lot, and waste Dennis Quaid and Paul Bettany's talents, a lot. Our original WTI here.

#4. Edge of Darkness (dir, Martin Campbell)
A satisfying return by Mr. Gibson sees him being dark/cranky in and around a series of grisly murders and poisonings to do with a vast nuclear conspiracy. A remake of a very good BBC miniseries from the '80s, Edge of Darkness is serious enough to be entertaining, and Gibson is mean enough to make the whole thing thrilling, if a tad… convoluted. Full review here.
