The DVD/Blu Ray Shed: October 17, 2011
Hey all! Check it out: new home video releases! WHAT FUN.
AND HERE THEY ARE: THE HOME VIDEO RELEASES FOR TODAY. CHECK YOU CALENDAR POTC: On Stranger Tides(dir. Rob Marshall) Wow, for a film that no-one asked for it sure did make a shit-ton of money. Which I guess sends a message to film executives that this ride is far from over. Johnny Depp alone has made enough money off these films to start his own space program. Please think of buying this film on DVD or Blu Ray as donating to the construction of a new shuttle hangar.
Batman Year One(dir. Sam Liu, Lauren Montgomery) Over the past 20 years Warner Bros. animation has always done a fairly decent job bringing DC comics characters and stories to life through various celebrated animated series and most recently, direct-to-DVD feature-length animated films. The latest of these is Batman: Year One, which is directly adapted from one of the most beloved Batman comics ever written (by 300’s Frank Miller). Haven’t seen it, but it’s made by a trusted animation studio and, come on... it’s Batman. Also, it features Bryan Cranston, which is great, because I’m got serious Breaking Bad withdrawl. Red State(dir. Kevin Smith) I just don’t know... now that it’s out on video I might have to check it out after all. I’ve never been a fan of Smith’s and everything I had heard about this “fake Wesboro Baptist Church Horror film” earlier in the year turned me off but recent praise form both Kurt Halyard and our own Tara Mason kinda obliges me to suck it up and just give it a chance. Let’s meet back here next week and discuss... Cape Fear(dir. Martin Scorsese) It takes a certain level of talent to remake a classic and outdo the original but IMHO that’s exactly what living legend Martin Scorsese did with this chilling tale back in the early 90s. It’s simple; the man was on a creative hot streak (this is Goodfellas/Casino era Scorsese), he put together an incredible cast and he made slight adjustments to the story which improved upon the original. The result is one of the most powerful thrillers ever filmed that you’ll never quite shake, no matter how hard you try. Available for the first time on Blu, which is super cool. Definitely picking this up. Criterion Collection: Kuroneko(dir. Kaneto Shindō) This is a 1968 Japanese horror film about a mother and daughter who are raped and murdered only to return as ghosts who rip out the throats (!) of a bunch of Samurai who had the bad luck of walking through their turf. Some seriously creepy kabuki-esque imagery (as well as some great use of double exposure and other camera tricks) make this a film that’s sure to inspire nightmares. And if you’re a dude, self-loathing.
