The DVD/BLU RAY Shed: October 4, 2011

We’ve deployed our Nitro boosters and now we’re heading fastly and furiously into the Hallowe’en season! They just keep releasing scary movies on Blu Ray and we keep on buying/renting/downloading (legally, of course) them. We’re fanatics, we tells ya. And this week there’s a bunch of other stuff worth watching too! All in all, not bad for the first DVD Shed of October!

HERE ARE ALL THE AWESOME NEW RELEASES FOR TODAY AND WE DO MEAN AWESOME:

Fast Five
(dir. Justin Lin)

This stupidly-awesome franchise just won’t quit! And with the ridiculously dumb-but-fun installment of Fast Five they’ve put these movies back on the public’s radar. Enough people went to see it and liked it that you can expect a gazillion more sequels in the near future. Good on them for bringing Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson into the mix - that dude deserves to be a bigger star than he already is and with this series he might just get there. If you haven’t seen it, Fast Five is about beautiful people pulling a heist while driving fast cars. Also, street racing, natch.

The Lion King: Diamond Edition
(dir. Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff)

Of all the precious metals and valuable minerals and gems in the world, diamonds are undoubtedly the best. They are a girl’s best friend, they can cut glass, they can be used to focus a laser beam into a death-ray AND they represent one’s intentions to marry the crap out of the person they love. Plus, I’ve heard tell that diamonds are forever, so there’s that too. Anyways, one of Disney’s most overrated animated films gets the diamond treatment, which I guess is justified seeing as they put all that time and effort and resources into making The Lion King one of the most successful animated feature films ever produced. It just recently enjoyed yet another theatrical run that made them a bit of coin and now they’ll probably make even more moola with this diamond release. Good for them! I’m just going to leave this here.

Scream 4

(dir. Wes Craven)

Now we’re getting to the good stuff. This new installment of the popular, self-referential Scream franchise wasn’t exactly the most amazing film I’ve seen in my life but you know what? it wasn’t the worst either! It was great to see these old characters again, and I feel like they did a pretty great job introducing some new characters into this world. A stand-out was of course Hayden Panettiere, who really, really, really does an amazing job with her role, such as it is. I honestly didn’t know she had it in her, but damn, she’s a pretty great actress as it turns out! Anyways, if you’re going to sit through an entire Scream marathon, there’s enough good stuff in this one to keep you interested. Check out all our Scream stuff here, here and here.

Dead Alive (Braindead)

(dir. Peter Jackson)

Back before he was given the reins to some pretty big-deal Hollywood properties (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) Peter Jackson made a couple of hilarious and incredibly gory splatter films for no money down in his native New Zealand. Braindead stands as a masterpiece from this period of his career. Beloved by horror and gore fans the world over it is often celebrated as the high water (blood?) mark for low-budget, goofy horror thanks to its production’s record-setting amount of fake blood used on set (over 1000 gallons). Now available for the first time on Blu!

Criterion Collection: Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom
(dir. Pier paolo Passolini)

Proooooobably the most disgusting film available in the illustrious Criterion Collection. After the fall of Mussolini, a bunch of Italian Aristocrats kidnap 18 teenage boys and girls and perform some of the most degrading, violent and torturous acts ever captured on film for 4 months straight. People eat poo, fercrissakes. Not exactly a horror film in the strictest sense, but neither was Martyrs, and that film scared the shit out of me. Salò might do the same for you. Very, very disturbing. (Fun Fact: Director Pier paolo Passolini was murdered shortly before the film was released! Happy viewing...)
