The DVD/Blu Ray Shed: September 13, 20

Hey folks, now that TIFF is nothing but a fading memory in our brain-mind, why don’t we take some time and catch up with some home video releases? YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!

HERE ARE SOME DVD AND BLU RAY RELEASES THAT CAME OUT LAST WEEK AND ALSO SOME THAT ARE COMING OUT TODAY:

Citizen Kane - 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition
(dir. Orson Frickin’ Welles)

For as long as I’ve been interested in film I’ve firmly believed that this 1941 masterpiece truly is, as the hype might suggest, the greatest American motion picture ever made. It is, on numerous levels a remarkable achievement in filmmaking and should be examined in great detail by anyone who wants to learn more about the history of the medium, the business behind it and it’s craft. This set would be a great place to start as they don’t skimp on the extras. If you don’t own this film, now’s a good time to buy...

Star Wars - Complete Saga (Blu ray)

(George Lucas)

I have definitely been curious about the high resolution presentation of these iconic films, but not curious enough to purchase this set for the 4th time in my life, especially considering the actual films I fell in love with are nowhere to be found (and are probably lost forever). The DVDs I bought a few years ago will do me just fine. Apparently though, there are a bunch of cool deleted scenes in this set. Let me know what they’re like!

Thor

(dir. Kenneth Branagh)

What a nice surprise it was to go to the theatre, watch a summer blockbuster about Thor fercrissakes and actually walk out with a huge smile on my face. As predicted, Kenneth Branagh was a pretty smart choice for director considering his Shakespearean roots and Thor’s larger-than-life persona and flowery olde english-ey language. And the action was pretty cool too.

Bridesmaids(dir. Paul Feig)

Directed by the creator of Freaks and Geeks and co-written by SNL star Kristin Wiig, Bridesmaids is one of this year’s best comedies, even if it is a little uneven. What stands out is Wiig’s performance, as this is the first time I’ve seen her play one character for longer than 5 minutes, which is great because she’s a talented actress and can certainly carry a film on her own. The character she plays is instantly relate-able and genuine and I hope she gets more chances like this in the future...

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop

(dir. Rodman Flender)

It’s kind of amazing that Conan O’Brien has never straight-up tried his hand at stand-up comedy, because it’s obvious by watching this incredibly illuminating doc that he’s definitely got the chops for it. Between losing the Tonight Show to Jay Leno and starting his own show on TBS, Conan grew a beard and went on tour. This film documents that period while giving the viewer a never-before-seen glimpse into Conan’s day-to-day dealings with staff and friends - he always seems to be ‘on’ and is consistently hilarious, which is what makes this doc worth watching overall. As a bonus, however, it’s inspiring to see somebody pick themselves up after a serious career bow and plow ahead into an unknown future with such bravado. If you weren’t on Team Coco before, this film will make you a convert.

Dumbo: 70th Anniversary Edition

(dir. Ben Sharpsteen)

Having not seen it since I was five I decided recently to rent Dumbo and was pleasantly surprised... It’s only the fourth feature-length animated film that Disney produced and therefore shares the ‘early '40s charm’ you might find in Snow White or Bambi. This is early period Disney, before any true formulas began to emerge. Definitely worth revisiting for the character design, the drinking sequence and most of all for the great mentor character in Timothy the mouse, whom I’ll always prefer to that damn singing cricket.
