thesubstream BEAT: February 21, 2012
Hey friends, Tara Mason here with your weekly update on what's going on here at thesubstream! I just got back from Vancouver (which is such a beautiful city) and finished filming some really cool stuff for some future episodes of The Film Lab. You will see them in May and it will all make sense then. If you haven't entered our contest yet, then you probably should get on that because your time is running out! YOU, yes YOU, can win a BLU RAY PLAYER with 10 past Best Picture Oscar winners on Blu Ray. How awesome is that? Here's what we've got going on this week:
- Oscar Week with Mike the Greek! - Ghostbusters 3 to be Murray-less - In Theatres: This Week's New Releases - Coming Soon: This week on thesubstream.com - In Case You Missed It: Stuff from the past week! ![]() Oscar Week with Mike the Greek Greetings and Salutations from my mouth to your eyes, in the sense that I am here in thesubstream studio eating two Hot Dogs and also shouting these loud words to a woman who is typing them out simultaneous to me saying them, so that they will be transported to you electronically, where you will read them, is the idea. They call me Mike the Greek, and I am (there is bragging coming so if you don't want to see it, look down below at the other parts) the best Oscar Awards Handicapper in the country of America and also all of the rest of them. This week, every day starting yesterday, I am sitting down and recording my absolute best picks for your Oscar pool, for free, for you to use to dominate, control and destroy your pool competition. Want to know how confident I am about myself (more bragging)? We're putting thesubstream's money where my beautiful mouth is. Come join our contest, and see if you can beat me for a chance to win a Blu Rays player and some movies and some a my mom's cookies. Good luck... (rude words coming) you'll need it. ![]() Ghostbusters 3 to be Murray-Less As you know, a third Ghostbusters film has been in 'development' for like, forever (first mentioned in way back in 1998) and the wrench in the gears has always been the reluctance of Bill Murray to return to the franchise. Murray has been very picky-choosy about his film roles for the last decade or so. Sean fills you in on the scoop behind the sequel's production. ![]() Wanderlust (Paul Rudd + Jennifer Aniston) - David Wain, the director of the cult-classic Wet Hot American Summer and the criminally underrated Role Models teams up again with Paul Rudd and the inexplicably popular star whose continued appearances in films we can only assume is Faustian-bargain-related Jennifer Aniston brings us Wanderlust. Two overly-leveraged Manhattanites find much goofiness when they inadvertently check into hotel that's actually a hippie commune! We're seeing it early, so we'll let you know if it's good! Gone (Amanda Seyfried + Jennifer Carpenter) - Amanda Seyfried (owner of the world's largest eyeballs and recent star of the kind of bad Red Riding Hood and In Time movies) turns from hunted to hunter when a serial killer takes her sister! Why won't anyone believe her! Goon (Jay Baruchel + Seann William Scott) - Canadian wunderkinds Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg team up write a deeply Canadian script that's not about longing or isolation or even feeling feelings of longing while being isolated - Goon stars Seann William Scott as Doug Glatt, semiprofessional hockey punch master. Played to mixed/positive reviews last year at TIFF and is at a bare minimum waaaay better than Score: A Hockey Musical. Act of Valor (Mike McCoy + Scott Waugh) - This movie—an indie snapped up by Relativity Media in the summer—stars real Navy SEALS and was advertised almost exclusively during Ultimate Fighting matches and on the website for a videogame called Battlefield 3. Is that germane? We think so, and we'll see it and tell you if we're right. ![]() Coming Soon We're up to our necks in Oscar fever (our necks are also very hot, you know, because of said fever)! Mike the Greek is back with a full week of Oscar coverage and he will also be hosting a very special episode of the Film Lab, once again dissecting the art and science of this year's Best Picture nominations. If you think you have what it takes to beat MIke the Greek's Oscar picks, you might just win yourself a Blu Ray Player and the past 10 Best Picture winners on Blu Ray so enter now! ![]() In Case You Missed It Last week, it was Valentine's Day and Rajo begged you NOT to see the spy vs. spy flick This Means War and recommends an 80's classic starring Michael Douglas as a rare bird exporter. He also talked about what he thought about Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance for 2 minutes straight. In The Film Lab, Matt Brown started thinking about how he's going to dress his elevator set and paid a visit to a local prop house. That's it for this week, make sure to come hang out with me over on Twitter, Facebook and our forum! Peace out!
