thesubstream BEAT: January 24, 2012
Hey everyone! Tara here for this week's edition of thesubstream BEAT! Oscar nominations have been released and there's tons of buzz going on right now. I want to know what films YOU are rooting for so let me know on Twitter, Facebook or our Forum! Also, if you want to stay ahead of the game and know what we've got coming up first, sign up to our brand new Weekly Newsletter! Here's what we've got happening this week and what you may have missed last week:
- Oscar Nominations are out! – Mike the Greek special - Film Festival Deadlines! - This Week’s New Releases: Katherine Heigl's back for another kick at the can; Wolves are eating dudes - Coming Soon: Postproduction how-to from Rajo in the Film Lab + Blu Ray Reviews out the wazoo - In Case You Missed It: All the best stuff from the past week ![]() Oscar Nominations are out! - Mike the Greek special So they hauled me down out the stands at Daytona Beach Kennel Club (I got a part interest in Poopy Pete who was lookin’ kind of not good in the fourth) to commence my annual coverage of the exciting world of Professional On the Oscars Gambling. Early surprises include a couple of well-deserved nominations for Bridesmaids in serious categories, the Academy going international with its nominees for best Animated Feature, and the almost complete blanking of Drive, thesubstream guys' fave flick o' the year. Click here for the complete list of nominees and some early handicapping from me, Mike the frickin’ Greek. ![]() Film Festival Deadlines! - Rajo came straight outta the Film Lab with a crazy helpful list of Film Festival Submission Deadlines for this year, and all kinds of helpful advice for ensmoothening out the fraught and frightfully anxious-making submission process. You can do it! ![]() Man on a Ledge (Starring Sam Worthington and Elizabeth Banks) - Asgar Leth, who was… an assistant director on Lars von Trier’s The Five Obstructions apparently, directs the Handsome Australian in this Phonebooth-esque gimmick thrillier. Will it be as good as Man on Wire or Bird on a Wire or Snakes on a Plane? We will go see it, think about that question, and tell you the answer. One for the Money (Starring Katherine Heigl) - Your high-gloss Hollywood choice this week stars Katherine Heigl as author Janet Evanovich’s massively popular, beloved bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Will Heigl break her Edmonton-Oilers-like losing streak of massive critical flops (rottentomatoes scores for her last movies: 7%, 29%, 11%, 14%, 40%) or will she somehow be in a movie other than Knocked Up that’s worth watching? We’ll find out. The Grey (Starring Liam Neeson) - There's quite a bit of excited buzz about this regular-dudes-versus-killer-wolves movie, and why not - Liam Neeson (having lately proved his tough-guy genre chops in Taken and Unknown) stars and Joe Carnahan (who stared off strong with Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane and Narc before making Smokin' Aces and The A-Team) directs. Word is it's a scary, beautiful survival tale with a brainy side, which sounds right the hell up our alley this week. Monsieur Lazhar (Starring Mohamed Saïd Fellag) - Mike the Greek let us know that director Philippe Falardeau's incomparably moving classroom drama is the odds-on fave for the Oscar Foreign Language Picture. Monsieur Lazhar was already named the best Canadian feature at TIFF this past year, and for good reason - it's definitely worth tracking down if you can find it. ![]() Coming Soon - We’re in The Film Lab working on a really cool How To Fix This Cruddy Thing in Post Sound video, starring our favouriteist handsomest post-master general Rajo, so keep your peepers peeled for that. In the Blu-Ray shed we’re gonna be talking about some Woody Allen classix, Real Steel, a cancer comedy and Wilder and Pryor’s finest (cough, cough) collaboration. We’ll also be hitting you up with reviews of the two aforementioned new releases, Man on a Ledge and One for the Money. ![]() In Case You Missed It - Crazy amounts of reviews got pumped out last week: Kurt Halfyard liked Haywire almost as much as classic wuxia, while Matt Brown waxed disappointed about Red Tails (much to the chagrin of some people on YouTube). I personally kind of liked the Vampire movie, and Tara finished her contest submission, hoping to win a chance to interview Daniel Radcliffe.
