My third day of Toronto After Dark began early when Toronto movie nerds (yours truly among them) rally to see the Festival's only non-horror film Lloyd The Conqueror, which is based on the world of LARPing. Don't know what LARPing is? It stands for Live Action Role Playing. Think "Dungeons in Dragons" but more intense, and with foam swords replacing dice.

This total geek comedy follows three college students, Lloyd, Oswald and Patrick. They're failing their classes and about to lose their financial aid when their professor Derek played by Mike Smith (aka Bubbles from The Trailer Park Boys) forces them to partake in a battle to achieve extra credits. The boys take the offer, and the ante is upped: they bet that if they can defeat "Derek The Unholy" they will automatically pass the course with high grades. Accepting the challenge they then go on the search to find a mentor: a retired LARPer Andy, the "White Wizard" (Comedian Brian Posehn, who was in attendance of the screening). They also gain the aid of Lloyd's dream girl Cassandra (played by Tegan Moss) who happens to be an ex-cage fighter and "Self Defence for Women" instructor.

It isn't the best film ever but it is entertaining nonetheless. It's quirky and lives completely and authentically in the nerd world which is nice to see. It was also nice to see Mike Smith in a completely different role than Bubbles. I would recommend this film for those who spark an interest in LARPing or if you just want to laugh at some hilarious geekery, and hey, who doesn't.
