Toronto After Dark 2012: [REC] 3: GenesisZombies of all stripes came shambling out of the darkness for Saturday's TAD double feature. Coinciding neatly with Toronto's Annual Zombie walk - where enthusiastic undead fans get to roam around the city in their full, horrifying zombie glory. It was rather perfect that both films of the night were zombie flicks, and seeing them with a devoted crowd of latexed-up death fans made both screenings that much better. ![]() First up was the 3rd film (out of a soon be to 4) in the Spanish REC series, directed this time by Paco Plaza. The film is, weirdly, a incredibly romantic love story that takes place at a beautiful wedding, which turns traumatic and violent when an Uncle who'd been bitten by a dog begins to show signs of a strange illness. The virus slowly spreads throughout the wedding to only become a complete bloody human eating mess. The story itself follows the bride and groom—separated during the chaos—trying to make their way back to each other. ![]() I completely loved this film. It's the perfect recipe for a horror flick: the perfect Martha-Stewart-right amount of gore, romance, unpredictability and comedic relief. All of the actors in this film did a fantastic job especially the lead actress (Leticia Dolera) who nailed the impossibly difficult mixture of terrified, strong, and unapologetic while tearing apart her zombified family and friends with a chainsaw. The film was beautifully shot, as well, and this is doubly weird for a REC film which are traditionally kind of ugly (given that they're composed of shaky-cam footage shot by sprinting characters running around an apartment building at night). REC 3 was great, and hopefully we won't have long to wait for REC 4, which is being directed by Jaume Balagueró, Plaza's directing partner for the first two films.
