Unsurprisingly Palin-Heavy Trailer for Game Change Released

The full-length trailer for HBO Films’ Game Change, based on the book of the same name on the 2008 U.S. presidential election, was released today and it’s about as Sarah Palin-heavy as we could have hoped for. The movie, which premieres on March 10, 2012, focuses on the race from the perspective of Republic nominees John McCain and Palin, played by Ed Harris and Julianne Moore, who gives Tina Fey a run for her money in the resembling-a-former-Alaskan-beauty-queen department.

The movie, which also features Woody Harrelson at McCain’s campaign chair, is being directed by Austin Powers- and Meet the Parents-director Jay Roach. It's written by Danny Strong, best known for his role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (he must be channelling the ultra-successful, alternate reality Jonathan).   Strong and Roach previously collaborated on Recount, another HBO Films production on the 2000 U.S. presidential election and the infamous Florida recounts.

Game Change marks the latest example of the ongoing enBuffyization of Hollywood entire: w
hile Buffy’s eternal underdog Jonathan is off writing political drama for HBO, the rest of the cast and crew aren’t doing too badly for themselves, either. Creator and showrunner Joss Whedon is currently editing mega-movie The Avengers and his little horror-movie-that-could, The Cabin in the Woods, which he made with Drew Goddard (Buffy, Lost, Alias, Angel, Cloverfield) and stars Thor star Chris Hemsworth, is set for release on April 13, 2012 after a long wait in Hollywood limbo. (Note: SXSW announced today that Cabin in the Woods will have its premiere there this spring - Ed.)

The other cast members, meanwhile, are largely sticking to television these days: Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing twins on Ringer, Nicholas Brendon made a few appearances on Criminal Minds, Anthony Head has been sticking to his British roots on the BBC’s Merlin and popped up briefly in The Iron Lady, Charisma Carpenter has been doing a slew of guest roles and starring in something called The Lying Game, and, with possibly the most success, David Boreanaz is still starring in Bones while Nathan Fillion’s got his own crime procedural, Castle.

Of course, of any other Buffy alum (aside from Whedon himself), Alyson Hannigan, who played redheaded Wicca-nerd Willow, is probably seeing the most success of late with How I Met Your Mother in its seventh season and another instalment in the American Pie series, American Reunion, coming out on April 6, 2012. (The trailer for that was also just released on the unsuspecting masses.)

Not bad for a show that many never felt got its due - the Whedon/Buffy-Alum gang are scheduled to fight the Apatow/Freaks & Geeks-Alum gang in a Michael Jackson-style knife-dance fight in a warehouse in the valley next week.
