Werner Herzog to Play a Villain in a Tom Cruise Action Thriller!

Man, this V.I.D.I.F.H. is unstoppable!

Variety.com just told me that Werner Herzog is taking the next logical step in his very interesting career by playing the villain in the next Tom Cruise action movie, One Shot. No, really.

After hearing Hugo Weaving’s awesome take on Herzog in his role as the Red Skull in this summer’s Captain America, it certainly seems like a no-brainer to cast the actual dude himself in some juicy part that gives him the flexibility to basically be as awesome as he can be. We’re talking about a guy who in real life rescued Joaquin Phoenix from a flaming wreck and was shot by a sniper during a BBC interview.

He’s one of those guys whose speaking voice is instantly recognizable and immediately commands an undying, devotional respect. As the narrator of his own documentaries (Grizzly Man, Into the Abyss) his voice has the uncanny ability to pry open the plates of your skull and penetrate deep into your brain tissue, locking your attention onto whatever he might be talking about in a hypnotic, mystical way that, if you’re not careful (or if you don’t have a spotter) can leave you a drooling vegetable. Hell, in regular interviews it’s hard to not get a Bond villain-vibe from Herzog. He’s just got that certain something that I’m surprised people haven’t already tried to get up on that silver screen in a major role of some kind.

In another time he would have been the perfect Hans Gruber. Who knows, maybe that sort of timeless, unforgettable onscreen persona awaits Herzog in One Shot.
