Winstead's Smashed Picked Up by Sony Classics

Brief bit of news from the festival circuit for you:  one of the legit hits at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Smashed, which starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead as an alcoholic schoolteacher trying to go sober. Directed by James Ponsoldt, the film is a potential breakout role for Winstead, whose career so far has seen her confined to genre fare, stuff like Final Destination 3, Live Free or Die Hard, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World

It has now been reported that Smashed has been picked for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics.  The film does not yet have a release date, though it might be safe to assume that given the film's indie heritage and the threat of a youngish, good looking actress with chops working her game out in a role as a boozer there's non-zero chance we'll be seeing her name on some awards ballots next year.
